Who are we and how we started?

As salaamu ‘alaikum. Peace and blessings to each and everyone. I am Nafisah Romero, co-founder of JamiSah Homemade Hair n Body Treats. ‘JamiSah’ is a fusion of my husband’s name and mine because it was a brand started by both of us. ‘Homemade’ because we wanted to generate the idea of warmth, love, wholesomeness, genuine quality, good intentions and thoughts with the products we create, added to the fact that we formulate in the kitchen of our home. Prior to entering the life of entrepreneurship, my husband and I worked in my father’s establishment in Port of Spain for several years, where part of our job was to research and study the raw materials my father would import on a regular basis, so that we could be adequately equipped to inform and educate the customers on the uses and benefits of said raw materials. Inspired by our research, we instantly became pro-everything natural, and started experimenting with concoctions for personal use; I, mostly, in an effort to improve my acne-prone skin and grow my natural hair.

Though I was “part” of a “family business”, I never saw it as my own, and longed to establish a brand that I could call mine. As a result, I approached my husband with the thought and immediately we started brainstorming ideas for an introductory product and possible ingredients that it would comprise of while driving home. Our first product, the Hair & Body Oil Moisturizer, was motivated by several customers’ requests for an oil mixture for hair. However, we thought why not make a mixture that has a dual purpose? A product that will be beneficial for both the hair and skin. One Saturday evening, before the store’s closing hour, we used our weekly wage to purchase raw materials and so, our business was born! Little by little we kept adding products to our lineup based on request by customers as well as to satisfy our innovative spirit to explore, include and make use of the many great natural ingredients available locally and abroad.
